Effect of Fertilizer Subsidy on Rice Production in Tillabery Region of Niger: Propensity Score Matching Analysis
Published: 2019-08-01

Abstract

This study is devoted to evaluation impact of the fertilizer subsidy on rice production. It’s divided into two stages: determining the observable characteristics influencing the adoption of subsidized fertilizers and determining the effect of the fertilizer subsidy on rice production. We used a logit and two algorithms of the propensity score matching method to know: (i) the nearest neighbor and (ii) the kernel. The effect of fertilizer subsidy on rice production was measured by the difference between the average effect of the treated group (beneficiaries of the subsidy) and that of the control group (not beneficiaries of the subsidy). The data used is primary data. They are based on a survey in the Tillabery region nearby rice producers. This survey provided the characteristics information of the different households in 2017-2018 crop years. The sample size is 200 households whose, 51 beneficiaries of the fertilizer subsidy and 149 non-beneficiaries. The results obtained from study; show that the fertilizer subsidy increases the productivity of rice by 453.82 kg ha-1. The variables such as: improved seed, sex, area influence the adoption of fertilizer subsidized.
