Abstract

Pregnancy represents a physiological state in which the adaptation of the thyroid function constitutes a crucial dynamic process for the adequate development of the product and maternal-fetal health. Thyroid dysfunction, in conjunction with diabetes, is established as the most frequent endocrine disorders during pregnancy. In this regard, maternal thyroid dysfunction can lead to serious complications for the mother and the fetus; such is the case of premature birth, preeclampsia, miscarriage and low birth weight. In addition, the development of the central nervous system of the product may be compromised.
